The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has begun implementing health sector projects announced in the 2026-27 Union Budget. Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda reviewed progress on multiple initiatives aimed at strengthening emergency care, expanding the healthcare workforce, improving drug regulation, and developing India’s medical tourism capabilities.
Key Projects and Timelines
Emergency and Trauma Care: The government plans to increase emergency and trauma care capacity in District Hospitals by 50 per cent. Out of 613 District Hospitals assessed against Indian Public Health Standards, 160 have been selected for Phase I strengthening by March 2027. An additional 203 hospitals will be covered in Phase II and 250 in Phase III.
Healthcare Workforce: The Ministry is training 1.5 lakh multiskilled caregivers aligned with the National Skill Qualification Framework. Training has already started and covers areas such as wellness, yoga and operation of medical and assistive devices. Over the next five years, the government also aims to add 1 lakh Allied Health Professionals across 10 disciplines.
Drug Regulation: The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation will be strengthened to meet global standards through a dedicated scientific review cadre. An expert committee has submitted its report on the required workforce structure and pay levels.
Mental Healthcare: A new institute, NIMHANS-II, will have 1,000 beds. The Central Institute of Psychiatry in Ranchi and Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health in Tezpur will be upgraded as Regional Apex Institutions with advanced psychiatry, neurology and neurosurgery facilities.
Medical Value Tourism: Five Regional Medical Hubs will be developed in partnership with the private sector. These will integrate medical, educational and research facilities with AYUSH centres and medical tourism facilitation infrastructure.
Clinical Research: The Biopharma SHAKTI initiative proposes a 500-crore investment to establish over 1,000 accredited clinical trial sites across India with a hub-and-spoke network model.
