The Ministry of Heavy Industries and Steel held talks with a delegation from the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy in New Delhi on 22 September 2026. Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy used the meeting to discuss ways India and the European Union can work together on electric vehicles, battery manufacturing, cutting industrial emissions and sustainable steel production.
What was discussed
The European Parliament delegation included eight members and support staff focused on industrial and energy policy. Minister Kumaraswamy outlined India’s main manufacturing schemes and initiatives. These include the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for the automobile sector, the PLI Scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cells (batteries), and PM E-DRIVE, which aims to boost electric vehicle adoption and domestic EV manufacturing.
The Minister invited European companies to bid for contracts to manufacture 10 gigawatt-hours of Advanced Chemistry Cells for stationary energy storage systems. The global bidding process runs until 13 October 2026.
On industrial decarbonisation, Kumaraswamy highlighted India’s work on green steel through scrap recycling, steel slag reuse and circular economy methods. He also mentioned BHEL’s indigenous gasification technology as part of India’s energy transition efforts.
The Minister stressed that these discussions follow the 16th India-EU Summit held in January 2026, which saw the conclusion of a Free Trade Agreement between the two sides and adoption of a Joint India-EU Comprehensive Strategic Agenda.
