The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, led by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has outlined an action plan to strengthen Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) across India through closer involvement of State governments. The plan includes upgrading infrastructure at 300 KVKs and creating new skill and business incubation centres at all KVKs over the next two years.
Key targets and timelines
The government aims to upgrade infrastructure and logistics at 300 prioritized KVKs by March 2027. This upgradation will involve financial and institutional support from State governments and State Agricultural Universities.
By December 2028, all KVKs will have Incubation-cum-Skill Centres established. These centres will connect KVKs with farm-based businesses, technical institutions and opportunities suited to each district.
Currently, under the Cluster Frontline Demonstrations programme for pulses and oilseeds, 353 KVKs across 24 States are working on a target area of 12,349 hectares. Nearly 9,750 hectares have already been covered.
The meeting also discussed reforms to KVK staff salaries, allowances and promotions, which have received approval from the Department of Expenditure. States have been asked to fill vacant positions and contribute to National Pension Scheme and retirement benefits for KVK employees.
