Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan visited Shillong on 7 September 2026 and laid foundation stones for infrastructure projects in Meghalaya valued at over ₹1,000 crore. The visit underscores the central government’s push to develop the North-East region through targeted investments in water, roads, healthcare and power infrastructure.
What is being built
The Vice-President inaugurated and laid foundation stones for six separate undertakings across the state. The largest project is the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme Phase II, Part A, budgeted at ₹850.58 crore under the Urban Challenge Fund. Two road connectivity projects are being developed under the North East States Infrastructure Development Scheme. The state will also get a 30-bedded Ayurveda, Yoga and Unani Siddha facility at Shillong Civil Hospital and a new electrical substation at Mawkhanu under the Prime Minister Development Initiative for North East Regions. A maternity and children’s hospital at Nongstoin, completed at a cost of ₹31.05 crore under the National Health Mission, was also inaugurated.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-President highlighted that over 46,000 kilometres of rural roads have been constructed across the North-East during the last decade under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, with spending exceeding ₹47,000 crore. He commended Meghalaya’s participation in the Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 and various state government development initiatives.
