India’s Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan laid the foundation stone for infrastructure projects worth ₹110 crore at Gauhati University on September 7, 2026. The development will benefit students and faculty at the institution, which is ranked among the top state public universities in the country. The Vice-President also released two books during the ceremony and spoke about India’s educational expansion and linguistic heritage.
What the projects will include
The ₹110 crore investment will fund four major components at Gauhati University:
- A new multidisciplinary academic building to expand teaching facilities
- A new boys’ and international students’ hostel for residential accommodation
- Upgrades to the auditorium
- Library improvements and expansion
Gauhati University, established on January 26, 1948, holds the distinction of being Northeast India’s first university. It currently holds NAAC A+ accreditation and ranked 9th among State Public Universities in the National Institutional Ranking Framework 2025.
During the event, the Vice-President released two publications: “Bhupen Hazarika: Hundred Years of a Wandering Songs” and the 5th revised edition of “Chandrakanta Abhidhan”, a work on Assamese lexicography. He also highlighted the university’s research contributions in areas including the Brahmaputra Basin, endangered languages, women’s studies and environmental sustainability.

The Vice-President noted that women’s enrolment in higher education across India has grown from 1.57 crore in 2014-15 to 2.24 crore in 2023-24, representing a 42.2 per cent increase. He also urged students to pursue research that addresses community challenges and to contribute towards building a developed India by 2047.
