The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has cleared a major infrastructure project for Varanasi following Union Cabinet approval in July 2026. The Varuna Elevated Corridor, a 43.218-km elevated road project worth ₹10,998 crore, will run alongside the Varuna River and connect National Highway 31 with the Varanasi Ring Road. The National Highways Authority of India will build and manage the corridor.
Project Details and Scope
The corridor will be predominantly elevated, with 6 lanes in one direction and 4 lanes in the other. It will include flyovers, loops, ramps and service roads, along with an iconic cable-stayed bridge and an extradosed foot over bridge. Construction costs have been divided into ₹4,565.33 crore for civil works and ₹934.91 crore for land acquisition.
The project aims to link key transport points in the city, including Varanasi Airport, Varanasi Cantonment, Varanasi City Railway Station, Kashi Railway Station, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction and Ramnagar Port. Designed for speeds of 80–100 kmph, the corridor is expected to reduce travel time between NH-31 and Kashi Railway Station from roughly 40 minutes to around 20 minutes. The journey between Varanasi Junction and the airport should fall from nearly one hour to about 20 minutes.
The project forms part of Varanasi’s broader decongestion plan and aligns with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. It will improve connectivity to six major logistics nodes and the Chandauli Socio-Economic Zone.
