CSIR Transfers Technologies for Sustainable Leather Processing and Safer, Greener Roads to Industry

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) held a technology transfer event on 16 September 2026 to hand over innovations developed by two of its institutes to industry partners. The Ministry of Science & Technology facilitated the move, which brings laboratory solutions for leather manufacturing and road infrastructure closer to commercial use.

What technologies are being transferred

The CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute (CSIR-CLRI) in Chennai presented two technologies. The first recovers chromium-free protein from chrome shavings, a non-biodegradable waste from leather tanning. This recovered protein is converted into syntans—compounds used in leather retanning—which can reduce dissolved solids in post-tanning wastewater by up to 50 per cent. The technology has been tested at pilot scale (100–200 kg) and validated at commercial scale (1,500 kg).

CSIR-CLRI’s second technology processes spent pickling acid from steel manufacturing, recovering iron and chloride to make pigment-grade iron oxide and ammonium chloride. This converts hazardous waste into commercially useful products while cutting environmental pollution.

The CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI) in New Delhi transferred two road-related technologies. ClariVisor is a glare-reduction device for car visors that requires no structural changes to vehicles. A second innovation is a two-pack pothole filling mix that requires no heating or hot-mix plant, reduces energy use and emissions, and allows roads to reopen faster.

These transfers aim to make industrial processes more sustainable and environmentally friendly. If adopted, the leather processing technology could reduce chemical pollution from tanneries. The pothole repair solution may lead to faster road repairs and safer travel. The technologies represent CSIR’s effort to move research from laboratories into practical use that affects manufacturing, infrastructure and daily life.
