The Ministry of Jal Shakti and Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs have announced Swachhata Hi Seva 2026, an annual nationwide cleanliness campaign that runs from 17 September onwards. Union Ministers including Shri C. R. Patil, Shri Tokhan Sahu and Shri V. Somanna called for widespread citizen participation in this movement aimed at building cleanliness habits across the country.
Campaign Details and Key Activities
The theme for this year is ‘Swachhata Mein Sahbhag; Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat’, emphasizing that cleanliness is everyone’s responsibility. The campaign focuses particularly on students and youth as drivers of sustained behaviour change.
The campaign has five main pillars:
- Identifying and cleaning difficult or dirty spots and high-traffic public places
- Engaging students and youth through visits to waste management facilities and educational sessions on water management
- Running health camps for sanitation workers to provide check-ups, safety equipment and welfare scheme linkages
- Building citizen awareness through activities like sports-based engagement, tree planting under ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’, and teaching the 4-way waste segregation system
- Promoting waste recycling and circular economy initiatives through ‘Waste to Wealth’ and ‘Waste to Art’ programmes
A nationwide one-hour volunteer service called ‘Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath’ will take place on 1 October 2026 from 8-9 AM. On 2 October, observed as Swachh Bharat Diwas, villages will hold Special Gram Sabhas and cities will hold Special Council Meetings to discuss cleanliness outcomes and new waste management rules. Plantation drives will also occur on this day.
