The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment has released updated figures on the Pradhan Mantri Young Achievers Scholarship Award Scheme for Vibrant India (PM-YASASVI), which supports students from Other Backward Classes, Economically Backward Classes, and Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes. Since the scheme’s introduction, over 10.69 crore students have benefited through scholarships, hostel facilities and access to quality education.
How much money has been spent and who gets help
Between 2014-15 and 2025-26, the government has released Rs 15,555.53 crore under PM-YASASVI across four main components.
- Pre-Matric Scholarships: Rs 2,163.15 crore released to 6.43 crore students in classes 9 and 10. In 2025-26 alone, Rs 252.21 crore went to 25.22 lakh students.
- Post-Matric Scholarships: Rs 12,118.75 crore distributed to 4.26 crore students pursuing education after class 10. The 2025-26 allocation was Rs 1,138.88 crore for 31.29 lakh students.
- Hostel Construction: Rs 346.79 crore spent to create 28,865 hostel seats for boys and girls. In 2025-26, Rs 21.06 crore added 3,700 new seats.
- Top Class Education in Schools: Rs 116.69 crore supported 45,228 meritorious students since 2022-23. The 2025-26 budget was Rs 75.63 crore for 27,007 students.
- Top Class Education in Colleges: Rs 810.15 crore aided 37,937 students from 2023-24 to 2025-26. In 2025-26, Rs 368.86 crore covered 17,295 students in premier institutions.
What this means for you
If you belong to an OBC, EBC or DNT community and are studying in school or college, PM-YASASVI can help you stay in education by covering some costs. The scheme offers direct financial aid through scholarships, provides residential hostel spaces if you study away from home, and gives extra support if you get into top-ranked schools or colleges. The government says the aim is to reduce school dropouts and ensure that lack of money does not stop capable students from studying.
