You register your business as an MSME free of cost on the Udyam Registration portal (udyamregistration.gov.in). Udyam registration is self-declared, Aadhaar-based, and takes only a few minutes, unlocking access to priority sector lending, collateral-free loans under CGTMSE, government tender preferences, and delayed payment protection under the MSME Act.
What you need before you start
Keep the Aadhaar number of the proprietor (for proprietorship), managing partner (for partnership) or an authorised signatory (for company/LLP), PAN of the business, and GSTIN if applicable (mandatory for entities required to have GST registration).
Step by step
- Visit udyamregistration.gov.in and click ‘For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME’.
- Enter Aadhaar number and name, then validate with OTP.
- Enter PAN details; the system auto-fetches some business information from income tax and GST databases.
- Fill in business details including investment in plant/machinery and annual turnover (self-declared).
- Submit the form; no documents need to be uploaded.
- Receive the Udyam Registration Number and e-certificate instantly upon successful submission.
Fees and timelines
Udyam registration is completely free and instant – the e-certificate is generated immediately after submission with no waiting period.
What to do if it goes wrong
If Aadhaar OTP validation fails, check that your mobile number is correctly linked to Aadhaar and retry. If PAN or GSTIN details don’t auto-populate correctly, verify they match the income tax/GST records exactly, and update those records first if there’s a mismatch, then retry registration.
