You register free on the e-Shram portal (eshram.gov.in) to get a Universal Account Number (UAN) based e-Shram card, which creates a national database of unorganised workers and makes you eligible for social security benefits including accident insurance cover and access to various welfare schemes.
What you need before you start
Keep Aadhaar card with a mobile number linked to it (for OTP authentication), bank account details, and basic information about your occupation and monthly income.
Step by step
- Visit eshram.gov.in and click ‘Register on e-Shram’.
- Enter your Aadhaar-linked mobile number and complete OTP verification.
- Enter your Aadhaar number and verify with another OTP or biometric authentication (at a CSC).
- Fill in personal details, occupation, education, skills and bank account information.
- Review the auto-filled Aadhaar details and submit the form.
- Download your e-Shram card with a unique 12-digit UAN.
Fees and timelines
Registration is free and takes about 10-15 minutes to complete online, with the e-Shram card generated instantly upon successful submission.
What to do if it goes wrong
If OTP is not received, ensure your mobile number is correctly linked to Aadhaar (check via UIDAI or visit a CSC to update it), then retry. For any data correction after registration, use the ‘Update Profile’ option on the e-Shram portal with your UAN.
