You can check your PF balance for free in four ways: give a missed call to 9966044425 from your UAN-registered mobile, send an SMS EPFOHO UAN ENG to 7738299899, use the UMANG app, or log in to the EPFO member passbook at passbook.epfindia.gov.in. For the missed call and SMS options, your Universal Account Number (UAN) must be activated and linked with Aadhaar, PAN or bank account.

1. Missed call
- Call 9966044425 from the mobile number registered with your UAN. The call disconnects after two rings and is free.
- You receive an SMS with your PF balance and last contribution details.
This works only if your UAN is activated and at least one of Aadhaar, PAN or bank account is seeded with it.
2. SMS
- Send EPFOHO UAN ENG to 7738299899 from your registered mobile. Replace ENG with the first three letters of your preferred language, such as HIN for Hindi, TAM for Tamil or BEN for Bengali.
- You get an SMS with your balance.
3. UMANG app
- Download UMANG from the Play Store or App Store and register with your mobile number.
- Search for EPFO and select View Passbook.
- Enter your UAN, get the OTP and verify.
- Select the member ID (each employer has one) to see the passbook.
4. EPFO member passbook
- Go to passbook.epfindia.gov.in.
- Enter your UAN, password and captcha, and verify with OTP.
- Select the member ID and click View Passbook. You can download it as a PDF.
The passbook shows employee share, employer share, pension (EPS) contribution and interest year by year. Note that the passbook may not show the latest month if your employer has not yet deposited it.
Activate your UAN first
- Go to the EPFO Member e-Sewa portal, unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in.
- Click Activate UAN.
- Enter UAN, Aadhaar, name, date of birth and mobile, and verify with Aadhaar OTP.
- A password is sent to your mobile. Log in and change it.
If you do not know your UAN, find it on your salary slip, ask your employer, or use Know Your UAN on the member portal with your mobile and Aadhaar.
Understanding your PF balance
- Employee share: 12% of your basic pay plus DA deducted from salary.
- Employer share: 3.67% goes to EPF and 8.33% (on wages up to Rs 15,000) goes to the Employees’ Pension Scheme. The EPS part does not show as withdrawable balance.
- Interest: declared every year by EPFO and approved by the Finance Ministry. It was 8.25% for 2024-25.
Under the new labour codes, the definition of wages has changed, which can increase PF contributions. Read our labour codes explainer.
Common problems
- No SMS after missed call: UAN not activated, KYC not seeded, or calling from an unregistered number.
- Passbook shows no recent entry: employer has not filed the return for that month. Raise a complaint on EPFiGMS if it continues.
- Two UANs: merge them through One Member One EPF Account on the member portal.
- Name or DOB mismatch: submit a joint declaration correction request through the member portal.
