Before you begin
Fresh passports and renewals are handled through the Passport Seva portal of the Ministry of External Affairs. You apply online, book an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra, and visit once with your documents.
Step by step
- Register on passportindia.gov.in with your details and log in.
- Choose Apply for Fresh Passport or Re-issue of Passport and fill in the online form.
- Pay the fee online and book an appointment at your nearest PSK.
- Print the application receipt and visit the PSK on the appointment date with original documents.
- Complete document check, photo and biometrics at the counter.
- Police verification follows in most fresh cases, then the passport is printed and sent by Speed Post.

Fees can be revised, so confirm on the portal before paying.
Documents commonly needed
- Address proof such as Aadhaar, electricity bill, bank passbook or rent agreement.
- Date of birth proof such as birth certificate, school leaving certificate or PAN with date of birth, and Class 10 mark sheet.
- Old passport and its photocopy for renewals.
- Annexures as applicable, for example for minors or name changes.
Tips
Use the mPassport Seva app to track status. Passport Seva does not use agents; beware of look-alike websites and use only passportindia.gov.in. The helpline is 1800-258-1800.
