From Emotional Distress to Renewed Purpose: Lena’s Journey of Recovery

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has shared the recovery story of a nursing professional from Manipur who overcame substance dependence through structured treatment and rehabilitation. The case study demonstrates how timely intervention, counselling and family involvement can help individuals return to productive lives after struggling with drug use.

The Story and the Support System

A 37-year-old nursing lecturer from Imphal West, Manipur, turned to substance use following emotional trauma after separating from her husband. Despite holding an MSc in Nursing, the dependence severely affected her mental health, relationships, finances and career. She experienced two treatment relapses before seeking help.

On 9 May 2024, she was admitted to Sneha Bhavan, an Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts operating under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction. At the facility, she received:

  • Medical care and health monitoring
  • Individual and group counselling sessions
  • Psychosocial support and relapse-prevention training
  • Life-skills education and confidence-building activities
  • Family counselling and occupational guidance
  • Continued follow-up support after treatment

The structured environment helped her regain emotional stability, discipline and hope. She has maintained sobriety since 2024 and returned to her profession as a nursing lecturer, restoring financial independence and overall quality of life.

What This Means for You

The account highlights that recovery from substance dependence is achievable when professional treatment, family participation and ongoing rehabilitation support work together. Individuals struggling with drug or alcohol use have access to centres like Sneha Bhavan that offer comprehensive care beyond just medical treatment. If you or someone you know faces emotional distress or substance use challenges, rehabilitation services under government schemes can provide the structured support needed to rebuild confidence and return to work and family life. The key is accessing help early and maintaining commitment to recovery with proper counselling and follow-up care.
