You apply for GST registration free of cost on the GST portal (gst.gov.in). Registration is mandatory for businesses crossing the notified turnover threshold, or for those wanting to claim input tax credit and sell across states. The process is fully online and typically completed within 7 working days if documents are in order.
What you need before you start
Keep PAN of the business/proprietor, Aadhaar of the proprietor/partners/directors, proof of business address (electricity bill, rent agreement), bank account details (cancelled cheque or bank statement), photographs, and the business constitution document (partnership deed, incorporation certificate, etc.).
Step by step
- Visit gst.gov.in and click ‘Register Now’ under Taxpayers.
- Fill Part A with PAN, mobile number and email to generate a Temporary Reference Number (TRN).
- Log in with the TRN and complete Part B with business details, address proof and bank details.
- Upload photographs and required documents.
- Complete Aadhaar authentication (e-KYC) for faster approval.
- Submit using DSC, e-sign or EVC.
- An Application Reference Number (ARN) is generated; track status online.
- Download the GST registration certificate once approved.
Fees and timelines
GST registration is free of cost on the portal. With Aadhaar authentication, approval typically happens within 7 working days; without it, or if flagged for physical verification, it can take up to 30 days.
What to do if it goes wrong
If a query is raised by the GST officer, respond within the stipulated time (usually 7 days) with clarifications and additional documents via the portal, otherwise the application may be rejected. If rejected, you can reapply with corrected information.
