How to Update Aadhaar Card Online: Address, Documents and Other Details

You can update your address and refresh your identity and address documents in Aadhaar online on the myAadhaar portal, myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in, by logging in with your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your linked mobile. UIDAI has kept the online document update free until 14 June 2027. Changes to your photo, fingerprints, iris or mobile number need a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre, where a demographic update costs Rs 75 and a biometric update Rs 125.

What you can update where

UIDAI has been adding services to its new Aadhaar app, so check the portal or app for what is currently available online.

Before you start

• Your mobile number must be linked to Aadhaar to receive the OTP. If it is not, visit a centre first to link it.
• Keep a scanned copy (JPEG, PNG or PDF, under 2 MB) of a valid proof of address in your own name. Accepted documents include passport, voter ID, driving licence, ration card, bank passbook with photo, and electricity, water, gas or telephone bills not older than three months.
• If you do not have an address proof in your own name, you can update through the head of family, using a document that shows your relationship, such as a ration card, marriage certificate or passport.

Step by step: update address online

1. Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and click Login.
2. Enter your Aadhaar number and captcha, then verify with the OTP.
3. Click Address Update, then Update Aadhaar Online.
4. Read the guidelines, select Address and click Proceed to Update Aadhaar.
5. Enter your new address exactly as it appears on your proof document.
6. Select the document type and upload the scanned copy.
7. Review, submit, and pay the fee if one applies. The online document update is free till 14 June 2027.
8. Note the 14-digit Update Request Number (URN).

Step by step: free document update

UIDAI asks people whose Aadhaar was issued ten or more years ago and never updated to refresh their documents. This keeps records accurate and does not change any details.

1. Log in at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
2. Click Document Update.
3. Verify your existing details, then upload one proof of identity and one proof of address.
4. Submit and note the URN. No fee is charged until 14 June 2027.

Update at an Aadhaar centre

1. Find a centre and book an appointment at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra through the myAadhaar portal, or walk into a bank or post office enrolment centre.
2. Fill the Aadhaar enrolment and update form, or let the operator fill it.
3. Give your biometrics for authentication and submit original documents for scanning.
4. Pay the fee and collect the acknowledgement slip with the URN.

How many times can you update?

• Name: two times in a lifetime.
• Gender: once.
• Date of birth: once, subject to conditions.
• Address and mobile: no fixed limit.

For changes beyond these limits, you have to apply through the UIDAI regional office with supporting documents.

Check update status and download the new Aadhaar

1. On myAadhaar, click Check Enrolment and Update Status and enter your URN.
2. Once the status shows Completed, click Download Aadhaar, enter your Aadhaar number and OTP, and download the e-Aadhaar PDF. The password is the first four letters of your name in capitals followed by your year of birth.

Common problems

• Request rejected: usually because the address on the form did not match the document, or the scan was unclear. Resubmit with a clear document.
• OTP not received: your mobile is not linked. Visit a centre.
• Fake update sites: use only uidai.gov.in and myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. UIDAI helpline: 1947.
