The Ministry of Railways has greenlit a 252 crore rupee investment to install Kavach 4.0 safety technology across more than 600 kilometres of track in the Lucknow Division of North Eastern Railway. This project will expand an indigenous braking and collision prevention system to sections of the railway network that do not yet have it.
What the project covers
Indian Railways will deploy Kavach 4.0 across 607.7 route kilometres of the Lucknow Division. The total cost approved for this expansion is 252 crore rupees. Kavach is an Indian-made Automatic Train Protection system built to stop trains automatically and prevent them from passing signals when it is unsafe to do so. The system monitors train movement continuously and applies brakes when necessary, reducing the risk of collisions and signal-related accidents.
This rollout is part of a broader plan by Indian Railways to equip more sections of its network with Kavach technology. The Lucknow Division project will add this safety layer to identified portions of the railway line that currently lack such protection.
