The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports organised the 89th edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle in Surat on 6 September 2026, with Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi leading the event. The initiative aims to promote fitness and a substance-free lifestyle among young people across India, aligned with the government’s Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan (drug-free India mission).
Scale and Participation
Over 5 million people took part in the 89th edition across more than 25,000 locations nationwide. The Surat event began early morning at Sardar Patel Statue and included fitness activities, yoga, zumba and various challenges before a 6-kilometre cycling ride to Sarthana Zoo. Several national athletes participated, including table tennis player Achanta Sharath Kamal, wrestler Sarita Mor, and other Arjuna Awardees and Commonwealth Games medalists.
In New Delhi, the event was held at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium with a special Teachers’ Day theme, honouring coaches and educators. Around 1,000 students and fitness enthusiasts participated there.
Fit India Sundays on Cycle is organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports with the Cycling Federation of India, Raahgiri Foundation and MY Bharat. The cycling drive runs across all States and Union Territories at Sports Authority of India regional centres, National Centres of Excellence, training centres, and Khelo India facilities. Over 6,000 NAMO Fit India clubs also conduct the cycling initiative weekly nationwide.
What this means for you
If you are a young person or fitness enthusiast, these events offer a community space to cycle, exercise and pledge commitment to staying away from substance abuse. The government is trying to make fitness and cycling a regular habit rather than a one-time activity, encouraging people to use bicycles for daily travel to nearby workplaces. Participation happens at local levels in your State or Union Territory, making it accessible without requiring travel to major cities.
