Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan attended the 50-year celebration of Geetanagar College in Guwahati on 6 September 2026. He also opened the institution’s new academic building as part of the Golden Jubilee event. The college, formerly called Kanya Mahavidyalaya, has focused on educating women across Assam for the past five decades.
What happened at the event
The Vice-President praised Geetanagar College for its role in advancing higher education and strengthening women’s learning across the state. He spoke about Assam’s cultural heritage, its languages, literature, music, dance and theatre traditions. He also referenced the historical courage of Lachit Barphukan as a source of national pride.
During the ceremony, the Vice-President stressed that colleges must do more than prepare students for jobs. He said they should develop citizens who value democracy, the Constitution, social responsibility and nation-building. He called attention to opportunities in artificial intelligence, digital technology, biotechnology, space research and entrepreneurship for young Indians.
The Vice-President led attendees in taking a public pledge against drug use, asking students to reject drugs and encourage their peers to do the same. He described India’s youth population as the nation’s greatest asset and urged young people to make responsible choices to protect their health and future.
The Vice-President noted that Assam’s economy has grown significantly in recent years and ranks among India’s fastest-growing states. He highlighted state investment in healthcare, education, infrastructure, jobs and disaster management, as well as development of tea-garden communities.
