Vice President Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan addressed the 75th anniversary celebrations of Gordhandas Seksaria College of Yoga and Cultural Synthesis at Kaivalyadhama in Lonavala, Maharashtra on 18 September 2026. The occasion marked the college’s platinum jubilee after seven and a half decades of work in yoga education, research and cultural study. The Vice President also noted that Kaivalyadhama itself, which founded the college, completed a century of service to yoga.
What the Vice President said
The Vice President paid tribute to Swami Kuvalayananda, who established Kaivalyadhama in 1924 at a time when yoga was largely seen as a mystical rather than scientific practice. Swami Kuvalayananda pioneered the scientific examination of yoga as a discipline. The Vice President stressed that past achievements must be safeguarded and passed on to coming generations.
Speaking to the significance of yoga practice, the Vice President observed that yoga helps calm the mind and create balance between physical and mental health. In the modern era marked by rapid technology and constant digital information, he said yoga offers a way to step back, focus and reflect. He cited the ancient concept of chitta vritti nirodhah, the ability to quiet mental fluctuations, as particularly valuable today when people face endless notifications.
The Vice President also acknowledged the global spread of yoga across different nations, cultures and communities, noting Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s role in promoting yoga internationally.
Addressing students at the college, the Vice President encouraged them to combine discipline and self-awareness with their natural energy and talent. He launched a book titled “Yoga Explained – Learn From the Master” by Shri O. P. Tiwari during the event and spent time on campus speaking with students.
What this means for you
The event underscores the Indian government’s backing for yoga as both a practical health tool and a cultural heritage worth preserving. If you study yoga or work in yoga education, it highlights institutional support for your field. For anyone practising yoga or considering it, the Vice President’s remarks frame the practice as a recognised method to manage stress and improve focus in today’s information-heavy world.
