The Ministry of Development of North-Eastern Region held the 9th Northeast Students’ Fest at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi on 4 September 2026. Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, who holds the portfolio for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, attended the event and engaged with young people from across the Northeastern states.
The festival brought together students and youth from the region to celebrate local culture and creativity on a national platform.
What happened at the event
At the gathering, Scindia observed a two-minute silence in solidarity with victims of recent devastating floods in Nepal. He asked the audience to stand and join him in the silence and extended condolences to those affected.
Scindia highlighted the My Home India initiative, which has been running for 21 years. He explained that the programme started as a support system for Northeast students and has grown into a national gathering where young Indians showcase regional diversity while recognising their shared identity.
Drawing a comparison with India’s major rivers, Scindia said that the Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati and Brahmaputra flow from different areas through varied terrain but eventually merge into one powerful stream without losing their distinct character. He used this to describe how the country’s youth from different regions could work together.
The minister called Northeast young people the growth engine of the region and builders of what he termed Viksit Bharat. He pointed to achievements by athletes and performers from the Northeast, including mentions of sporting talent. The event included a dance competition, and Scindia felicitated student participants and congratulated winners.
