The e-Shram Portal, launched by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, reached its fifth anniversary on 26 August 2026. The digital platform serves India’s unorganised workforce—including construction workers, domestic workers, street vendors, agricultural labourers and gig workers—by connecting them to social security benefits and job opportunities. The portal has registered over 31.89 crore workers since its inception in 2021.
How e-Shram Works and What It Offers
The e-Shram Portal created India’s first Aadhaar-based National Database of Unorganised Workers. Each registered worker receives a unique 12-digit Universal Account Number. The system was developed by the National Informatics Centre.
In October 2024, the portal evolved into a one-stop solution integrating 15 social security and welfare schemes on a single platform. Workers can now access employment services, skilling programmes, pension schemes and insurance benefits through one digital gateway.
Key services available include:
- Job listings through the National Career Service
- Skilling and apprenticeship opportunities via Skill India Digital Hub
- Identification of eligible government schemes through myScheme
- Two accident and life insurance schemes with automatic enrolment options
- Pension benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-Dhan Yojana offering a minimum assured pension of ₹3,000 per month from age 60
- Insurance cover of ₹2 lakh for accidental death or permanent disability, and ₹1 lakh for partial disability
- Life insurance cover of ₹2 lakh in case of death from any cause
The platform was expanded to support 22 languages in 2025 and includes provisions for migrant worker family details and construction worker registration with state boards.
Registration is free and open to any unorganised worker aged 16 and above who is not an income tax payer, EPFO member or ESIC member. Workers can register online, through Common Service Centres, or at state government offices using only their Aadhaar number and mobile number.
As of August 2026, women comprise 54.28% of registered workers. The largest occupational groups include agriculture, domestic and household work, construction and apparel sectors. Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra lead in registrations.
