The Chief Election Commissioner of India met with Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in Uttar Pradesh to recognise their role in conducting elections and maintaining electoral registers. The meeting, held in Lucknow, brought together over 500 BLOs and 30 supervisors from across the state to interact directly with the election leadership.
The Chief Election Commissioner described BLOs as essential to India’s democratic system, calling them the first point of contact between the Election Commission of India and voters. He emphasised that all electoral work in the country follows the Constitution, applicable laws, and Election Commission directives.
What happened during the meeting
The Election Commission highlighted the scale of recent electoral work in Uttar Pradesh. A Special Intensive Revision of Electoral Rolls completed in April this year added over 13.39 crore electors to the final register published for the state. This work involved 1.77 lakh BLOs, who were overseen during the process by over 5.82 lakh Booth Level Agents appointed by recognised political parties to ensure accuracy and fairness.
The gathering included a question-and-answer session where BLOs could raise concerns and seek clarification on their responsibilities and procedures directly from the election leadership.
