The Unified Payments Interface, or UPI, has completed a decade of operation in India. Minister of State for Women and Child Development Smt. Savitri Thakur marked this milestone by highlighting how the digital payment system has transformed the way Indians conduct everyday transactions.
What UPI has achieved
According to the Minister, UPI has become so widespread that it now serves transactions across every segment of Indian society. From small vendors selling tea at roadside stalls to canteens in educational institutions, from rural settlements to large commercial enterprises, the system handles payments with minimal steps. The process involves scanning a code, tapping on a phone screen, and completing the payment within seconds.
The Minister noted that this shift represents a fundamental change in how Indians manage money. What was once necessary to carry physical cash at all times has now become optional for many. A mobile phone has effectively replaced the traditional wallet for digital transactions across the country.
