ICAT Issues First Compliance Certificate for 15-Metre Multi-Axle Sleeper Bus

The Ministry of Heavy Industries, through its International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT), has certified India’s first 15-metre multi-axle sleeper bus that meets national safety standards. The certificate was awarded to Synaty Automotive Pvt. Ltd. This milestone signals progress in India’s long-distance passenger transport sector.

What got certified and how

ICAT issued the compliance certificate under two technical standards: AIS-119 and AIS-153, as per the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR). The Synaty Automotive bus is among the longest permissible configurations allowed for passenger vehicles in India.

The vehicle comes in two versions:

  • Fully sleeper variant with 42 berths
  • Hybrid sleeper variant with 21 berths and 42 seats

The bus has been tested for structural strength, emergency safety procedures, fire safety systems, passenger movement inside the vehicle, and travel comfort. The certification confirms the vehicle meets all applicable regulatory and technical requirements for safety and passenger accommodation.

The certificate was formally handed over to Synaty Automotive’s Managing Director Naresh Kumar Yadav by ICAT Director Saurabh Dalela.

What this means for you

If you travel long distances by bus, this certification indicates that new sleeper bus options will meet strict safety and comfort standards set by Indian regulators. Manufacturers now have a proven pathway to develop and certify longer, more comfortable buses for overnight journeys. ICAT’s work here shows that Indian testing facilities can evaluate modern bus designs, which may help bring newer vehicle options to the passenger transport market faster.
