Vice Admiral Damian Fernando, the newly appointed Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, is visiting India from 26 to 29 August 2026. The Ministry of Defence announced that this is his first overseas visit since taking charge. The four-day trip aims to deepen maritime ties and military cooperation between the Indian and Sri Lankan navies.
What happened during the visit
On 27 August 2026, VAdm Fernando received a ceremonial Guard of Honour at South Block in New Delhi and laid a wreath at the National War Memorial to pay respects to fallen soldiers.
He held talks with Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, India’s Chief of the Naval Staff, to discuss ways to strengthen maritime cooperation. Topics covered included joint naval operations, capacity building, training programmes and maritime security measures.
The Sri Lankan commander is scheduled to meet senior defence officials during his time in New Delhi and will also hold discussions with representatives of Indian defence industry organisations to identify partnership opportunities.
As part of the visit, VAdm Fernando will travel to Kochi to inspect Indian Naval training establishments and the Headquarters of the Southern Naval Command. The focus will be on expanding training partnerships and professional exchanges between the two navies.
