The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment has partnered with Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission to launch a nationwide scheme aimed at bringing together children, parents and grandparents. The Creating Intergenerational Bonding initiative will work through schools to strengthen family ties and pass down values across generations. The agreement was signed on 1 September 2026.
What the scheme will do
The programme will begin with research into family challenges affecting three generations. Studies will cover 50 schools across four regions of India to understand what pulls families apart in modern times.
The initiative will then design 20 Co-Learning Games based on evidence, which teachers can run in classrooms. These games are meant to bring together the wisdom of older family members with the perspectives of younger ones. A website offering resources in both English and Hindi will help teachers conduct these sessions.
Teachers participating in the scheme will receive certification training. The programme will then roll out across 200 pilot schools nationwide. An independent study will later measure whether the scheme actually works and guide decisions about expanding it further.
The scheme connects to the government’s existing Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana, which supports senior citizens. Ramakrishna Mission, with over 100 years of work in education and social service, will implement the programme.

If your child studies in one of the 200 pilot schools chosen for this scheme, they may participate in Co-Learning Games that involve family members from multiple generations. Teachers will be trained to facilitate these activities. The government intends this as a model that could eventually reach more schools across India, potentially giving more families a structured way to spend meaningful time together and share knowledge between generations.
