Indian Railways Approves ₹233 Crore for Electronic Interlocking at 21 Stations in Samastipur Division

The Ministry of Railways has sanctioned a fund allocation of ₹233 crore to install modern Electronic Interlocking systems at 21 stations under the Samastipur Division of East Central Railway. This project will replace older signalling technology and pave the way for rolling out Kavach, India’s homegrown automatic train protection system.

The Samastipur Division will see its existing Panel Interlocking systems upgraded to Electronic Interlocking across 21 stations. Electronic Interlocking is a computer-based signalling technology that replaces decades-old relay mechanisms with digital controls. This shift brings several advantages: the new system is more reliable, diagnoses faults faster, requires less maintenance effort, and allows railway operators greater flexibility in how they manage train movements.

Beyond just upgrading signals, this modernisation sets the ground for deploying Kavach, an indigenous automatic train protection system being developed by Indian Railways. Kavach is designed to prevent accidents by automatically applying brakes if trains approach each other too closely or breach speed limits.

The total project cost stands at ₹233 crore for work across all 21 stations in the division.
