India’s energy independence is directly linked to national security, according to Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology. Speaking at the 6th International Climate Summit 2026, he stressed that the country must build a self-reliant, homegrown and affordable energy system capable of deploying cutting-edge technology. His remarks underline the government’s view that energy decisions are strategic decisions affecting India’s standing globally.

Dr. Singh outlined several pathways for India’s energy future. Nuclear energy forms a pillar of this strategy, with targets set at 100 gigawatts of nuclear capacity by 2047. The government also aims to deploy five Small Modular Reactors by 2033. Beyond nuclear, green hydrogen and biofuels will drive India’s transition to cleaner sources.
The Minister flagged India’s growing start-up base as a resource for innovation. The number of start-ups has risen from around 350 to nearly 2,40,000, placing India third globally. He pointed to the one lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation Fund as a tool to encourage private companies to invest in new energy technologies and solutions.
Dr. Singh also noted that the Anusandhan National Research Foundation expects 50 to 60 per cent of its resources to flow from non-government sources, signalling a shift toward private sector-led research.
