APEDA Facilitates Flag-Off of 18 MT of NPOP-Certified Ethnic Rice from Tripura for Export to Austria and the Netherlands

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has facilitated the export of 18 metric tonnes of certified organic rice from Tripura to Austria and the Netherlands. The shipment, flagged off on 2 September 2026, comprises four distinct rice varieties grown by farmer groups in the state. This move creates new opportunities for Tripura’s agricultural producers to reach international markets and earn better prices.

What is being exported and who benefits

The consignment contains four varieties of National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) certified ethnic rice: Aromatic Kali Khasa, Aromatic Harinarayan, Biron (white sticky rice), and Maimi Hanga (black rice). These have been aggregated from Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) in Tripura that are supported by the Tripura State Organic Farming Development Agency (TSOFDA).

The exporting company is M/s Pratithi Organic Foods, Sonepat, which specialises in organic agricultural products. Austria and the Netherlands represent markets where international quality standards, food safety certification and traceability are strict requirements. Farmers participating in this export are expected to receive approximately 40% higher prices compared to what they would get in the domestic market.

The export follows a Reverse Buyer-Seller Meet organised by APEDA in Tripura the previous month, where international buyers and local producers connected directly. This shipment represents those business relationships being converted into actual export orders.

What this means for you

If you are a farmer or part of a farmer group in Tripura, this signals that certified organic farming can lead to substantially better income. Participation in organised export-oriented production, supported by state agencies and APEDA, creates a pathway to international markets. For consumers in Austria and the Netherlands, this means access to certified ethnic rice varieties from India’s North Eastern region. For India’s agricultural export sector broadly, the shipment demonstrates that premium organic products from smaller states can compete in demanding international markets when proper certification and support systems are in place.
