The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has announced a National Mass Pledge Against Drug Abuse this month to mark six years since the launch of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA). The government plans to mobilise over 10 crore citizens through both physical and online participation. The pledge invites people to commit to staying away from drugs and to help others overcome substance abuse.
What the pledge involves
Citizens can take the pledge online at https://nashamukt.dosje.gov.in/epledge. Pledge ceremonies will be organised across government offices, schools, colleges, military units, railways, police departments, hospitals and voluntary organisations nationwide. The NMBA helpline 14446 offers de-addiction support for those seeking treatment.
People interested in deeper involvement can register as a Nasha Mukti Mitra (drug freedom friend) through the official website https://nashamukt.dosje.gov.in/nasha-mukti-mitr. These volunteers help reach people struggling with substance abuse in their communities. So far, more than 1.64 lakh such volunteers have joined.
The campaign has already reached 34.56 crore citizens since 2020, including 13.71 crore young people and 10.65 crore women, through awareness programmes. A mobile application called NMBA 2.0 is available on the Google Play Store to help people find the nearest de-addiction centre.
What this means for you
If you or someone you know struggles with drug use, the pledge effort signals the government’s push to make treatment more accessible. The helpline and mobile app make it easier to find help without having to search through complicated systems. Taking the pledge yourself is a way to publicly commit to a drug-free life and to encourage others in your family, school or workplace to do the same. Volunteering as a Nasha Mukti Mitra offers a structured way to contribute to fighting drug abuse in your own community.
