The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has announced a specialised training programme on film preservation and restoration. The National Film Archive of India (NFDC-NFAI) and the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune will jointly conduct this workshop from October 5 to 15, 2026. The course is open to students, researchers, professionals and anyone interested in learning how to preserve, archive, digitise and restore films.
Workshop Details
The ten-day programme will run on weekdays only at NFDC-NFAI and FTII campuses in Pune. It will cover multiple aspects of film preservation including moving image conservation, digital restoration, metadata management, film cleaning and repair, audio restoration, and colour grading. Participants will receive classroom instruction, hands-on practical training, institutional visits and screenings of restored films.
The workshop will include exposure to:
- Film identification, inspection and manual repair techniques
- Film scanning, digitisation and projection methods
- Storage requirements and quality control procedures
- Professional restoration workflows with support from Prasad Corp.
Participants will visit NFDC-NFAI’s library and vaults, FTII, Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute and Reserve Bank of India Archives to understand different preservation practices. A dedicated session will showcase film preservation methods used by the Thai Film Archive.
