The Ministry of Railways marked one year since the opening of the Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line in Mizoram on 13 September 2025. The 51.38 kilometre track, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has brought significant changes to travel, commerce and daily life in the state. This development affects passengers, traders, students, tourists and businesses across Mizoram and its connections to other regions.
What the Railway Line Includes
The Bairabi-Sairang line is an engineering project built across difficult hill terrain. It contains 153 bridges in total: 55 major bridges, 88 minor bridges and 10 Road Over Bridges or Road Under Bridges. Six bridges stand taller than 70 metres, with the highest reaching 114 metres, which exceeds the height of Delhi’s Qutub Minar by 42 metres. The route also passes through 45 tunnels spanning nearly 16 kilometres.
The line connects four new railway stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang and Sairang. The Sairang station brings rail connectivity close to Aizawl, Mizoram’s capital and largest urban centre.
Passenger Services and Freight Movement
Three long-distance train services now operate from Sairang: to Delhi via the Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express, to Kolkata, and to Guwahati. A daily service to Silchar was added in January 2026. Over one year, these trains completed more than 1,100 trips and carried over 15 lakh passengers. All services run at over 100 per cent capacity regularly, with the Rajdhani averaging 145 per cent occupancy and the Kolkata service averaging over 140 per cent. The Sairang station has handled 5.54 lakh passenger movements, averaging 3,300 passengers daily. Ticket sales reached Rs 54 crores for Indian Railways.
Freight services have transported over 2,500 wagons of cargo. Approximately 70 per cent consisted of construction materials like cement, stone and sand. The first cargo train arrived one day after inauguration, carrying 26,000 bags of cement. Automobiles, foodgrains and fertilizers have also moved through the line, with 156 wagons of vehicles handled so far.
Impact on Tourism, Education and Local Business
Tourism in Mizoram has grown by over 86 per cent since railways began operations. Direct trains from major cities have made travel more affordable and accessible. The railway parcel service has enabled local producers to send high-value goods like Anthurium flowers to national markets. Students now have practical access to universities and professional institutes outside Mizoram. Local enterprises in hospitality, handicrafts, transport and retail are benefiting from increased visitor and commercial activity.
