The Ministry of Railways announced expansion of both passenger services and freight capacity during August 2026. Fourteen Amrit Bharat train services were converted from special to regular status, connecting major cities across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and other regions. The month also saw five new cargo terminals commissioned and a 5.4 per cent increase in freight loading compared to the same month last year.
The Numbers and Details
Indian Railways transported 137.9 million tonnes of freight in August 2026, up from 130.9 million tonnes in August 2025. Freight revenue grew by 6.27 per cent year-on-year. Specific commodity groups showed varied growth: iron ore loading increased by 12.1 per cent, clinker by 10.4 per cent, domestic container by 9.2 per cent and coal by 6 per cent. Finished steel, mineral oil, fertilizers and other goods also recorded increases.
On the passenger side, Indian Railways carried 67.27 crore passengers in August 2026, compared to 64.43 crore in August 2025. Suburban traffic showed particularly strong growth at 9.02 per cent, with 38.01 crore suburban passengers travelling during the month.
Five new Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals were commissioned during August 2026, located at Shivlakha in Gujarat, Nalli in Tamil Nadu, Shaktinagar in Uttar Pradesh, Deoragram in Madhya Pradesh and Brajrajnagar in Odisha. This brought the total number of such terminals to 149 as of 31 August 2026.
The 14 newly regularised Amrit Bharat services include routes such as Subedarganj to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Gorakhpur to Bandra Terminus, Gorakhpur to Delhi Junction, Ahmedabad to Bhagalpur, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus to Prayagraj Junction, Prayagraj Junction to Udhna Junction and Dhanbad to Coimbatore. The total number of Amrit Bharat services now stands at 86.
To manage festival season demand, Indian Railways operated 144 trips of Rakshabandhan Special trains between 25 and 31 August 2026, compared to 48 trips in the corresponding period of 2025.
