The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has released details of its scholarship programmes for disadvantaged communities over the past twelve years. The Department is backing educational access for Scheduled Castes, Other Backward Classes, Economically Backward Classes and Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes through direct cash assistance, residential facilities, and digital systems designed to reduce fraud and speed up payments.
The Numbers and What They Cover
Two main scholarship schemes are at work. The Pre-Matric Scholarships Scheme for Scheduled Castes and Others supports school-age children from SC backgrounds and children whose parents do hazardous or unclean work. Between fiscal year 2014–15 and 2025–26, the central government released Rs 4,893.03 crore under this scheme, reaching approximately 299.66 lakh students over the period. In the current financial year alone, Rs 562.36 crore went to 26.79 lakh students.
The Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme for Scheduled Caste students supports higher education. It aims to reduce the financial burden on poor SC families and improve college enrolment rates. From 2014–15 to 2025–26, the central government released Rs 46,581.54 crore under this scheme, benefiting 612.98 lakh students across the twelve-year span. In 2025–26 alone, Rs 6,186.95 crore reached 47.53 lakh students.
The Department has also introduced digital safeguards. From 2021–22 onwards, payments moved to a Direct Benefit Transfer system, sending money straight into Aadhaar-linked bank accounts. The government now uses de-duplication checks, biometric verification and electronic document proof to catch false applications. Integration with education databases and financial authorities like the Unique Identification Authority of India, National Payments Corporation of India and Public Financial Management System ensures money reaches real students faster and with fewer errors.
