The meeting highlighted how India Post has expanded far beyond its traditional role as a mail delivery service to become a platform for delivering government services and financial facilities directly to citizens across the country.
What India Post Now Offers
India Post has significantly broadened its service scope over the past decade. The postal network now provides:
- Express delivery services with 24-hour delivery in applicable cases
- Aadhaar-related services
- PAN and Passport Seva facilities
- Doorstep banking services through India Post Payments Bank
- Digital Life Certificates for pensioners
- Financial services delivered directly to villages and households
Dr Jitendra Singh noted that the postal worker has transformed into a multi-purpose service provider, delivering banking and essential government services alongside traditional letter delivery. He highlighted that the postal network played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic, continuing to provide essential services during lockdowns and helping distribute medical and protective supplies.
The minister described the Department of Posts’ nationwide network as a valuable asset for last-mile public service delivery and said it can be utilised more extensively for government programmes and citizen outreach. The employee organisations expressed willingness to support greater use of the postal network for public service delivery.
