The Union Home Ministry has announced major developments in promoting Indian languages at the Hindi Diwas 2026 and 6th All India Official Language Conference held in Mumbai. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing the event as chief guest, highlighted efforts to strengthen Hindi and other Indian languages in governance, education and administration. The announcements affect students, government employees, and anyone learning Indian languages.
What the government has achieved and launched
The Department of Official Language has significantly expanded the Hindi Shabd-Sindhu dictionary. It now contains 8 lakh words, growing from an initial 51,000 words. More than 50,000 words from local languages including Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali and Odia have been added to make Hindi more flexible. The dictionary is expected to become the world’s largest by 2029.
The government has also developed several technology platforms:
- AI-based “Kanthasth 2.0” with over 5 crore sentences, now open to foreign users
- “Bharti – Bahubhashi Anuvad Sarathi” translation tool
- LILA Rajbhasha and LILA Pravah platforms for learning Indian languages through artificial intelligence
- The “Indian Languages Section” has been launched
Four volumes of Official Language Committee reports have been submitted to the President since 2019, with a fifth ready. The government has trained over 5 lakh government employees in Hindi. Competitive entrance examinations including JEE and NEET are now conducted in 13 languages. Several publications were also released, including special editions focused on Vande Mataram, the national song, and works related to Indian knowledge systems.
