The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has released its monthly employment survey for August 2026, showing mixed signals across India’s labour market. The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), conducted by the National Statistical Office, tracks how many people are working, looking for work, or available to work across the country.
Key Labour Market Figures for August 2026
The overall Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR)—the share of people aged 15 and above who are either working or actively seeking work—rose to 55.6% in August 2026, up from 55.4% the previous month. Rural areas drove this increase, with LFPR reaching 58.2%, a gain of 1.2 percentage points compared to August 2025. Urban participation remained flat at 50.4%.
More people are actually finding work. The Worker Population Ratio (WPR) climbed to 52.8% in August, marking the highest level since March 2026. Rural workforce participation strengthened notably, reaching 55.8%, while urban areas stayed steady at 47.0%.
Women’s participation in the workforce is improving. Overall female LFPR increased to 34.8% in August, up 1.1 percentage points from a year earlier. Rural women showed stronger gains, with 39.4% participation compared to 37.4% in August 2025.
The unemployment rate held stable at 5.0% nationally. However, rural unemployment fell to 4.1%, its lowest point since January 2026. Urban unemployment remained nearly unchanged at 6.8%.
The survey covered 3,70,160 persons: 2,11,353 from rural areas and 1,58,807 from urban areas.
