The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PM-JDY), India’s flagship financial inclusion scheme launched in 2014, has completed 12 years of operation. The Ministry of Finance has marked this milestone by releasing updated figures showing how the scheme has expanded formal banking access to crores of Indians who previously had no bank account. The scheme now serves as the foundation for connecting low-income households, rural populations and women to banking, credit, insurance and digital payment services.
The Numbers Behind 12 Years of Growth
PM-JDY accounts have expanded from 14.72 crore in 2015 to 59.09 crore as of 19 August 2026. Of these, 45.95 crore accounts exist in rural and semi-urban areas, while 13.14 crore are in urban and metropolitan areas. Female beneficiaries account for 32.92 crore of all PM-JDY account holders.
Deposits in these accounts have risen approximately 20 times over the same period, from 15,670 crore rupees in March 2015 to 3,16,514 crore rupees as of 19 August 2026. The scheme has issued 41.29 crore RuPay debit cards to account holders, enabling digital transactions across ATMs and payment points nationwide.
Every Indian citizen is eligible to open a PM-JDY account regardless of age. There is no minimum balance requirement. Accounts can be opened at bank branches or through Bank Mitras (agents) by submitting an Aadhaar card, a government ID, address proof, a photograph and a completed account opening form. Joint accounts are also permitted.
Account holders receive a RuPay debit card with accident insurance coverage of 2 lakhs rupees. After six months of regular operation, holders can access an overdraft facility of up to 10,000 rupees per household. Accounts qualify for Direct Benefit Transfer payments and enrolment in government schemes including the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, Atal Pension Yojana and MUDRA lending.
What This Means for You
If you do not have a bank account, you can now open a PM-JDY account with minimal documentation and no charges. The account gives you access to government welfare payments, insurance protection, credit facilities and a digital payment card. For women and rural households in particular, this account serves as the entry point to formal financial services and the opportunity to build savings, access loans and plan for the future.
