The Ministry of Defence, along with the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, has formally initiated construction work on fourteen development projects at Lucknow Cantonment with a combined cost exceeding Rs 100 crore. The Raksha Mantri performed the Bhoomi Pujan ceremony on August 30, 2026, marking the start of these civic improvement initiatives in the cantonment area.
What these projects include
The fourteen projects span multiple areas of public need. They include an artificial intelligence-based waste processing plant, a multi-purpose sports facility, a modern crematorium facility, and water infrastructure comprising a 1500 kilolitre underground storage tank, replacement of deteriorated water pipes, construction of eight tubewells with automation systems, and overhead storage tanks.
Education and healthcare projects feature prominently. The plan includes a special school for children with disabilities, additional classrooms and toilets at two existing schools, a polyclinic in collaboration with the state government, and a coaching centre also run jointly with the state.
Urban infrastructure improvements include a multi-level automated car parking structure combined with a commercial complex and a facility for treating legacy waste through biological processes. Two of the fourteen projects are being executed in partnership between the Ministry of Defence and the Uttar Pradesh government.
During the ceremony, the Raksha Mantri also spoke about renaming four market areas in the cantonment. Royal Artillery Bazar has been renamed Ekta Bazar, British Cavalry Bazar as Uda Devi Bazar, British Infantry Bazar as Matadin Valmiki Bazar, and another British Infantry Bazar as Mangal Pandey Bazar. Kanedy Market has been renamed Atal Bihari Vajpayee Market, with the stated intention of connecting residents to India’s freedom movement and national figures.
