The Ministry of Railways has launched a focused push to strengthen safety standards across India’s rail network. Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw chaired a detailed safety review meeting on 3 September 2026 at Rail Bhawan, bringing together senior railway officials to address gaps in maintenance, technical systems and supply quality.
What the Railway Ministry is Targeting
The Minister has ordered concentrated efforts on several fronts. Signalling systems will receive priority attention to fix technical problems. Overhead equipment used for electric trains must be properly maintained and replaced once components reach the end of their designed working life.
Workshop maintenance is being tightened, especially for coaches. Officials must focus on electrical circuits and fire safety wiring. Wagon and coach wheels and couplers will come under closer inspection. Track maintenance will emphasise proper upkeep of point machines, turnouts and fasteners, with missing fasteners to be installed urgently.
The Railway Ministry will act strictly against suppliers delivering poor-quality materials. Any deficiency in Signalling and Telecommunication equipment, overhead equipment, track components, or coach and wagon parts will invite tough action. In cases of deliberate negligence, suppliers can be permanently blacklisted.
The Minister has also asked railway officers to coordinate with state and district governments ahead of festivals and fairs. These occasions often draw sudden crowds to railway stations, so advance planning will ensure passenger facilities are ready in time.
