From Alcohol Dependence to a New Beginning: Raihan’s Journey towards Recovery, Employment and Self-Reliance

The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment has shared the recovery story of a young man from Uttar Pradesh who overcame alcohol dependence and secured employment with support from a district de-addiction centre. The case demonstrates how structured rehabilitation and counselling services can help individuals rebuild their lives and return to work.

The Support and Services Provided

Raihan, a 29-year-old from Agra district, received free treatment and rehabilitation services beginning 20 January 2026 through Samuhik Utthan Sewa Samiti, a District De-Addiction Centre in Agra. The centre offered counselling, recovery assistance and regular follow-up interventions to address his alcohol dependence.

His recovery journey was complicated by several factors. He had completed only high school education, was unemployed, and came from a household where his father also struggled with alcohol dependence. The family’s finances depended on a small evening food stall. During early recovery, Raihan faced severe withdrawal symptoms including anxiety, insomnia and emotional distress, alongside social stigma and limited economic resources.

The sustained support from the centre focused on three areas:

  • Managing withdrawal symptoms and emotional difficulties through counselling
  • Building confidence and commitment to recovery through continuous follow-up
  • Preparing him for re-entry into employment and society

Raihan worked towards completing a General Duty Assistant programme supported by the centre while receiving treatment.

What This Means for You

District de-addiction centres across India offer free treatment and counselling services to individuals struggling with alcohol dependence, regardless of their employment or educational status. If you or a family member face similar challenges, approaching your local de-addiction centre can provide access to professional support without cost. The case shows that structured rehabilitation combined with job training can lead to stable employment even when someone has limited formal qualifications or a family history of addiction.

Raihan eventually secured employment in a private hospital, achieving financial independence and the ability to support his family. His transformation underscores how proper medical intervention, counselling and persistent follow-up can help individuals move from unemployment and distress towards meaningful work and recovery.
