India’s Prime Minister has outlined an expanded partnership with Belgium during a bilateral meeting, marking the Belgian leader’s first visit to India. The announcement covers defence cooperation, clean energy projects, and trade expansion, reflecting a decade-long deepening of ties between the two nations.
Key areas of cooperation
Defence and security: The two countries have agreed to increase military exchanges and training. India and Belgium will pursue joint defence projects, including co-development and co-production of equipment. They will also strengthen intelligence sharing and work together against cross-border crime.
Trade and investment: India has set up an Investment Fast-Track Mechanism specifically for Belgian companies. The India–Belgium Business Forum will now operate as a standing mechanism. Both nations have committed to doubling bilateral trade within five years.
Energy and minerals: A new Memorandum of Understanding on renewable energy has been signed. The countries will collaborate on critical minerals, particularly in processing and recycling. Belgium’s semiconductor expertise through its IMEC Institute will connect with India’s semiconductor sector.
People-to-people engagement: Start-up connections and maritime sector capacity building have been prioritised. University and research partnerships will be strengthened. A Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement is expected to be concluded soon to ease talent movement between the countries.
Existing projects: India and Belgium are jointly developing the Zorawar tank for advanced defence. A major green ammonia project is being constructed in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, described as one of the world’s largest.
